The Story

6b Charles Dickens. London; Chipman and Hall.  Tenth edition 1844.

Notes

A Christmas Carol is a short novel by Charles Dickens, first published in 1843, and it’s one of the most famous Christmas stories ever written.

The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a cold, miserly old businessman who despises Christmas and human kindness. On Christmas Eve, he’s visited by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley, who warns him that his selfish life will lead to eternal misery. Scrooge is then visited by three spirits—the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come—who show him scenes from his life, the suffering he causes others, and the bleak future awaiting him if he refuses to change.

At its heart, A Christmas Carol is about redemption, compassion, and social responsibility. Dickens wrote it during a time of extreme poverty in Victorian England, and the book strongly criticizes greed and indifference toward the poor, while celebrating generosity, empathy, and the possibility of personal transformation. Scrooge’s joyful change by Christmas morning—becoming generous, warm-hearted, and loving—has become a powerful symbol of hope and renewal.
