The Story

6W Frank Kafka. New York: Schocken Books, 1964.

Notes

Amerika (also published as The Man Who Disappeared), written by Franz Kafka between 1911 and 1914 and published posthumously in 1927, is an unfinished novel that follows the young Karl Rossmann, who is sent to the United States after a family scandal. As Karl navigates a strange and often disorienting version of America, he encounters a series of surreal and bureaucratic situations that reflect themes of alienation, authority, and the search for belonging. Though less overtly dark than some of Kafka’s later works, the novel still carries his distinctive sense of unease, blending elements of realism with an almost dreamlike distortion of reality.

Franz Kafka (1883–1924) was a Czech-born writer whose works have become central to modern literature for their exploration of anxiety, isolation, and the complexities of modern life. Writing primarily in German, Kafka often depicted individuals struggling against incomprehensible systems of power, as seen in works such as The Trial and The Castle. Amerika, assembled and published after his death by his friend Max Brod, offers an early example of Kafka’s unique voice, revealing both his evolving style and the themes that would come to define his lasting influence.
