The Story

5B Book of Mormon, Salt Lake City Utah, 1920, signed by Heber J. Grant

Notes

TheĀ 1920 edition of the Book of Mormon, marked a pivotal moment in the history of the sacred text of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Overseen by Apostle James E. Talmage, this edition introduced several significant updates to enhance readability and study. These changes included a new chapter and verse system, which replaced the longer chapters of earlier editions, and a comprehensive index, making it easier for readers to locate specific topics and passages. Additionally, the text was reformatted into double columns, creating a more modern and standardized appearance. Explanatory footnotes were also added, helping readers understand difficult terms and references.

The release of the 1920 edition came at a time when the Church was expanding its global missionary efforts and responding to a growing emphasis on doctrinal study among its members. The new features made the Book of Mormon more accessible and user-friendly for readers worldwide, aligning its structure more closely with the Bible and enhancing its role in religious education.

Printed in Salt Lake City, this edition became the foundation for all subsequent editions of the Book of Mormon. Its innovations not only standardized how the text was studied and cited but also reflected the Church’s broader commitment to education and outreach. The 1920 edition remains a significant milestone in the history of the Book of Mormon and continues to influence how the text is presented and studied today.
