The term "Catch-22" refers to a bureaucratic absurdity in which contradictory rules prevent escape from dangerous situationsāin Yossarian's case, the rule that states a pilot is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he requests to be grounded, he is considered sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved from duty. The novel explores themes of the absurdity of war, the dehumanizing effects of bureaucracy, and the paradoxes inherent in human existence.
