The Story
6B Five Books of Divine Law (first five books of the Old Testament). Amsterdam, 1655.
Note
The Five Books of Divine Law, more commonly known as the Pentateuch or the Torah, are the first five books of the Bible and form the foundational scriptures of Judaism and a central part of Christianity. They consist of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, and describe the creation of the world, the early history of humanity, the covenant between God and Israel, the exodus from Egypt, and the giving of divine law through Moses. These books establish core theological ideas such as monotheism, covenant, moral responsibility, and the relationship between law, worship, and community life.
Traditionally attributed to Moses, the Five Books of Divine Law contain narrative history alongside detailed legal, ethical, and ritual instructions, including commandments governing worship, justice, and daily conduct. In Jewish tradition, the Torah is the supreme expression of God’s will, read publicly in synagogue worship and studied intensively through commentary and law. In Christian tradition, the Pentateuch is understood as both sacred history and a theological foundation that is later interpreted through the life and teachings of Jesus, making these five books central to the religious, legal, and moral framework of the biblical world.
