The Story

6b Charles Dickens. Illustrated A. A. Dixon. London: Collins’ Clear-type Press, ca 1900.

Notes

Great Expectations, first published in serial form between 1860 and 1861, is one of the most celebrated novels by Charles Dickens. The story follows Pip, an orphan raised by his sister and her kindly husband Joe Gargery, whose life changes dramatically after a mysterious benefactor provides him with the means to become a gentleman in London. As Pip moves through different social worlds, he encounters a memorable cast of characters including the eccentric Miss Havisham and the proud Estella. Through Pip’s journey from childhood innocence to maturity, Dickens explores themes of ambition, social class, loyalty, and the often painful process of self-discovery.

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was one of the most influential writers of the Victorian era, renowned for his vivid storytelling and his ability to capture the struggles and aspirations of ordinary people. Drawing partly on his own experiences of poverty and hardship, Dickens infused his novels with strong social commentary on inequality and injustice in nineteenth-century England. Great Expectations is widely regarded as one of his finest works, admired for its richly developed characters and reflective tone. The novel has remained a cornerstone of English literature, continuing to resonate with readers for its exploration of personal growth and the meaning of true gentility.
