6B Hebrew Bible (Biblia Hebraica). Halae Magdeburgicae: Typis & Sumtibus Orphanotrophei, 1720.
Description
Hebrew Bibles have a distinctive printing and manuscript history shaped by the central importance of textual accuracy in Jewish tradition. Long before printing, scribes carefully transmitted the Hebrew Bible with meticulous attention to consonants, vowels, cantillation marks, and layout, a discipline that strongly influenced early printed editions. The first complete printed Hebrew Bible appeared in Italy in the late 15th century, most notably the Soncino editions and later Daniel Bomberg’s great rabbinic Bibles printed in Venice in the early 16th century, which set the standard text, pagination, and commentary format still used today. These printed Hebrew Bibles often included the Masoretic notes and traditional commentaries arranged around the biblical text, reflecting both scholarly rigor and the adaptation of ancient scribal practices to the new technology of print.
Notes
Light brown German pigskin binding, lavishly decorated in blind, some leaves browned but overall very fine copy. Michaelis's work of staggering scholorship was reissued throughout the 18th century.
