Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) is a Gothic coming-of-age novel that follows the life of an orphaned, plain, and fiercely independent young woman. After a harsh childhood with her cruel relatives and a bleak education at Lowood School, Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets the brooding and enigmatic Mr. Rochester. Their growing love is tested when Jane discovers Rochester’s dark secret—his wife, Bertha Mason, is alive but mentally ill and hidden away.
