Jane Eyre, first published in 1847, is the celebrated novel by Charlotte Brontë, originally issued under the pseudonym Currer Bell. The story follows Jane, an orphan who overcomes a harsh childhood to become a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she forms a deep and complicated relationship with her employer, Edward Rochester. Blending elements of Gothic fiction with a powerful coming-of-age narrative, the novel explores themes of independence, morality, love, and resilience. Jane’s strong sense of self and insistence on equality in her relationships set the work apart from many of its contemporaries and have helped secure its lasting place in English literature.

Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855), writing as Currer Bell to navigate the limitations placed on female authors in the Victorian era, drew on her own experiences of loss, isolation, and work as a governess in shaping the novel. Alongside her sisters Emily and Anne, she formed part of one of the most remarkable literary families of the nineteenth century.
