The Story

6R James Montgomery. Illustrated by Burkett Foster, J. Wolf. John Gilbert, engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. Binding by Hayday. London: Routledge, Warne, & Routledge, 1860. First Edition. Inscribed by Queen Victoria.

Royal Presentation copy from Queen Victoria Printed in London, inscribed by Queen Victoria to Lady Jane Churchill, Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen

Notes

The work contains 34 poems by the radical Scottish hymn writer and versifier, including " The West Indies" on the subject of the abolition of slavery. Montgomery was imprisoned for sedition twice. He espoused causes such as the plight of child chimney sweeps and prison reform. Today his best known work is the Christmas Carol " Angels from the Realms of Glory.”

James Montgomery’s poetry is best remembered for its moral seriousness, lyrical clarity, and strong humanitarian purpose. Writing in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Montgomery combined Romantic feeling with evangelical conviction, producing verse that addressed social injustice, religious faith, and human suffering. He was a committed abolitionist, and poems such as those condemning slavery helped popularize reformist ideas among a wide readership. Montgomery was also an influential hymn writer, crafting works that emphasized compassion, hope, and personal devotion, many of which remained in church use long after his death.

The recipient of this lavish royal Christmas present was Lady Jane Churchill ( 1826-1900), Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen. She was part of the queen’s intimate female household and played a significant role in the social and ceremonial life of the court. As a Lady of the Bedchamber, her duties included attending the queen at official functions, assisting with correspondence and personal matters, and acting as a trusted intermediary within court society. Members of the Bedchamber were often drawn from prominent aristocratic families, and their influence extended beyond formality, shaping court relationships and, at times, political atmospheres. Lady Jane’s position placed her close to the center of royal life, offering a rare vantage point on the personal rhythms of Victoria’s reign. This exquisitely bound volume is a testament to the bond between Jane and Queen Victoria.
