The Story

6 AĀ  Porter Rockwell Giclee Framed 30 x 20 ( art size)

Porter Rockwell.Ā Ā  By Mathew David Grant

Porter Rockwell, often referred to as "The Destroying Angelā€ by the early pioneer’s, was a boyhood friend and fiercely loyal bodyguard to Joseph Smith and later Brigham Young, serving as a vigilant protector of early Latter-day Saints during the early years of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

With his long hair and sharpshooting skills, he became a symbol of rough frontier justice and unwavering faith. Joseph Smith promised Rockwell that if he never cut his hair, he would be invincible to bullets—adding to his mystique and reputation.

Porter only had a second-grade formal education so he could not read or write, he could only sign his name with an ā€œXā€.Ā  He believed if he kept the First Edition of the Book of Mormon tucked into his belt, it would save his life. Legend has it, that some once tried to shoot him there and his life was protected when the bullet was not able to get to his body.

Matthew has captured the essence of the man and the story in this beautiful piece of art.
