In Les Misérables, the moment between Jean Valjean and Bishop Myriel is one of quiet, tender grace. When Valjean, lost and hardened by years in prison, steals the bishop’s silver, he expects condemnation—but instead receives mercy. The bishop gently tells him that the silver was a gift, and adds two silver candlesticks, saying they are his “soul’s ransom.” This simple act of kindness pierces Valjean’s heart and awakens something pure within him. The candlesticks become a symbol of love and light—of the faith that one man’s compassion can lift another out of darkness and set him on the path to redemption.
