5W Ruth Plumly Thompson. Founded on continuing the stories of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Illustrated by John R. Neill. Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co., 1923.
Notes
Ruth Plumly Thompson (1891–1976) was an American writer best known for continuing L. Frank Baum’s Oz series after his death, becoming the most prolific and influential of Baum’s successors. Beginning with The Royal Book of Oz (1921), Thompson wrote 19 official Oz novels, preserving the whimsical spirit of Baum’s world while introducing faster-paced plots, sharper humor, and a slightly more satirical tone. Her work kept Oz alive for a new generation during the 1920s–40s and helped cement the series as one of the longest-running fantasy franchises in American literature.
The Cowardly Lion of Oz (1923) is one of Thompson’s earliest and most beloved contributions. The novel centers on the Cowardly Lion’s quest to rescue a young boy from the dangerous Forest of Wild Beasts, giving depth to a character originally introduced in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Thompson expands Oz’s geography and mythology while emphasizing themes of courage, loyalty, and self-discovery. The book is historically significant for demonstrating Thompson’s ability to honor Baum’s characters while confidently reshaping Oz into a more adventurous, serialized fantasy world that sustained the series long after its creator’s death.
