The Cricket on the Hearth is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in 1845 as part of his series of Christmas books. Unlike some of his more politically charged works, this story focuses on domestic life and the warmth of home. The "cricket" in the title is a literal insect, whose cheerful chirping on the hearth (a symbol of the home) is believed to bring good luck and happiness to the household.
