The Story

6b Homer. Translated by George Herbert Palmer. Illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. Cambridge: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1929.

Notes

The Odyssey is the foundational epic of Western literature, chronicling the ten-year journey of the Greek hero Odysseus as he struggles to return home to Ithaca following the fall of Troy. Along the way, he must contend with the wrath of the sea god Poseidon, the enchantments of Circe, the lethal song of the Sirens, and the terrifying Cyclops, Polyphemus. Back in Ithaca, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus face their own battle against a horde of aggressive suitors vying for the throne. This 1929 edition utilizes George Herbert Palmer’sacclaimed rhythmic prose translation, which was specifically chosen to capture the natural, heroic cadence of the original Greek for a modern audience.
N.C. Wyeth was the preeminent figure of the Golden Age of Illustration, and his work for this volume is considered a high-water mark of his career. Commissioned to bring Homer’s world to life, Wyeth produced 16 dramatic oil paintings that focused on the psychological intensity and grandeur of the sea. His use of light and scale—most notably in the haunting "Odysseus and Calypso" frontispiece—gave the ancient characters a tangible, muscular reality that redefined how 20th-century readers visualized the Hellenic world. These paintings were so highly regarded that they were frequently exhibited as fine art in their own right, independent of the text they accompanied.
