The Story

6B Vulgate Bible. 1647. Latin.

Notes

The Vulgate Bible is a late 4th-century Latin translation of the Bible, primarily completed by St. Jerome. Commissioned by Pope Damasus I, it became the Catholic Church's officially recognized Latin version of the Bible. Jerome's work involved revising the Old Latin translations of the Gospels and translating the Hebrew Old Testament directly into Latin. The Vulgate was notable for its clarity and accuracy, shaping Christian theology and liturgy for centuries. It remained the standard Bible of Western Christianity until the Reformation and still holds significance in the Roman Catholic tradition.
