The Story

6C by Robert Hamelin, illustrated by Kate Greenaway. London: George Routledge and sons, ca. 1880s

Notes

The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a traditional folk tale that tells the story of a mysterious, colorfully dressed musician who saves the town of Hamelin from a plague of rats by luring them away with his magical pipe. When the townspeople refuse to pay the promised reward, the Piper takes revenge by leading the town’s children away, disappearing with them forever. The story has its roots in medieval Germany and is believed to be connected to a real historical event from the 13th century involving the loss or migration of Hamelin’s children. Over time, the tale was recorded and popularized by writers such as the Brothers Grimm and Robert Browning, and it has endured as a cautionary story about honesty, responsibility, and the consequences of broken promises.
