Hugh Lofting (1886–1947) was an English author best known for creating the Doctor Dolittle series, which began with The Story of Doctor Dolittle in 1920. Lofting invented the character while writing letters to his children during World War I, as a whimsical escape from the grim realities of war. Doctor Dolittle is a kind-hearted physician who learns to speak to animals and embarks on adventurous journeys around the world, combining humor, fantasy, and gentle moral lessons about compassion, understanding, and respect for all living creatures.

The Doctor Dolittle books were highly popular in the early 20th century and became enduring classics of children’s literature, inspiring numerous sequels, stage adaptations, and film versions.
