Notes

The Chronicles of Narnia, published between 1950 and 1956, is the celebrated seven-book fantasy series by C. S. Lewis that transports readers to the magical world of Narnia—a land of talking animals, mythical creatures, and epic struggles between good and evil. Beginning with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the series follows various children from our world who enter Narnia and take part in its unfolding history under the guidance of the noble lion Aslan. Blending elements of mythology, adventure, and Christian allegory, Lewis explores themes of courage, redemption, sacrifice, and the loss and rediscovery of innocence. The series has remained a cornerstone of children’s literature, admired for its imaginative storytelling and its ability to resonate with readers of all ages.

As the popularity of the series grew, subsequent early impressions and later 1950s printings were produced in larger quantities, but copies from this initial period remain valued for their proximity to the books’ original publication and their association with Lewis’s first audience. Over time, the series has been reprinted in countless editions, yet these early printings retain a distinct place for collectors and readers alike, representing the formative moment when Narnia first entered the literary world and began its lasting influence on fantasy literature.

C. S. Lewis (1898–1963) was a British writer, scholar, and theologian best known for his works of fiction and Christian apologetics. A professor of literature at both Oxford and Cambridge, Lewis combined his deep knowledge of mythology, medieval literature, and philosophy with a gift for clear and imaginative storytelling. He is most widely remembered for The Chronicles of Narnia, though his works also include The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity. Lewis’s writing often explores themes of faith, morality, and the nature of good and evil, and his ability to present complex ideas in an accessible and engaging way has ensured his lasting influence on both literature and religious thought.
